Al Pacino makes his first Los Angeles stage appearance, starring in and directing Eugene O’Neill’s short drama “Hughie,” about a 1928 New York City hustler talking to a hotel’s new night clerk after coming off a bender triggered by the funeral of the previous clerk.

The abstract spiritual works of American sculptor and painter Tobi Kahn will be included in the retrospective exhibition “Metamorphoses,” opening Sunday at the Skirball Cultural Center. The first retrospective devoted to Kahn will feature 43 paintings inspired by American spiritualist landscapes and 19 “sacred shrine” sculptures.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the locally based, internationally known Jazz Tap Ensemble dances rep favorites and new works by guest artist Gregory Hines and co-founder-artistic director Lynn Dally at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. The late Andy Simpkins was the first-call bassist of choice for many great jazz musicians and a close associate of such stars as pianist George Shearing, vocalists Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams and Carmen McRae and pianist Gene Harris of the Three Sounds. A veritable who’s who of jazz names is expected to turn out to celebrate Simpkins’ life--singers Ernie Andrews and Barbara Morrison, saxophonists Jeff Clayton and Pete Christlieb, drummer Jeff Hamilton and an entire orchestra of bassists under the direction of John Clayton among them--in this benefit concert to help pay the late maestro’s medical bills.

With her second album, “Spirit,” recently passing the 3 million sales mark in the U.S., San Diego’s Jewel is one of the ‘90s generation’s reigning singer-songwriters. On the eve of the release of a new single, “Jupiter,” she plays her largest Southern California show to date.
