Brea Olinda Unified School District trustees Monday will consider adopting a policy that would raise the standards for students advancing to the next grade. Last month the school board approved the first reading of the promotion and retention policy, which would have counselors and teachers monitor students in the second, third, fourth, sixth and eighth grades. Teachers and administrators would determine which students need to be held back for a year. A child’s academic, social and emotional growth must be considered in deciding if a student will repeat a grade, according to the policy. It also includes a plan to help students who are held back build their self-esteem. The meeting is at 7 p.m. in district headquarters, 1 Civic Center Circle.
