Mayor Reveals Cancer

SACRAMENTO —
Mayor Joe Serna said Thursday that he has cancer and will not seek a third term.
“All my life I have been beating the odds and I intend to work hard against beating this one,” Serna, 59, told reporters.
Doctors expect Serna to finish his term, which ends in 2000. The mayor’s illness is a recurrence of the kidney cancer he was diagnosed with nine years ago.
