Toy Recall

Re “U.S. Recalls Pool Dive Toys Deemed as Health Hazard,” June 25: The story tells us that more than 19 million pool dive sticks have been sold since 1979. And that in these 20 years, six children have been impaled. Four required emergency surgery. Of course it is very tragic that six children have been impaled; I notice that none died.

My question is, if in 20 years only four children have been injured to the point of needing emergency surgery, why are they recalling these toys? It seems that statistically this is a very safe toy. Or do we now require 100% safety in toys?

Perhaps some mathematician can tell us what the odds are that out of how many millions of times, how many millions of kids have used this toy and only six have been injured? In 20 years? Please tell me, what in life is 100% safe?
