Santo Has Heart Surgery

Former Chicago Cubs standout and current radio broadcaster Ron Santo had a successful quadruple bypass surgery Monday, according to doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Santo, 59, suffered a mild heart attack while in Denver for the Cubs’ series with the Colorado Rockies. He checked himself into a hospital there after experiencing chest pains.

The Pittsburgh Pirates put relief pitcher Mike Williams on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore arm. Manager Gene Lamont said he will use left-hander Jason Christiansen and right-hander Brad Clontz as the team’s closer. Williams converted 13 of 15 save opportunities. . . . With Rondell White eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list today, the Montreal Expos optioned Brad Fullmer to triple-A Ottawa.
