UC Irvine guard Gabe Cagwin said Tuesday he asked for a release from his scholarship.

Cagwin will try to transfer to another school, he said, preferably one on the West Coast.

Cagwin, a 5-foot-10 freshman, averaged seven points and made 42% of his three-pointers. He scored 20 points, making five of nine three-pointers, against Oregon State and had 15 points against Utah State.

He also was suspended twice, including the last five games for “inability to follow team guidelines,” according to Coach Pat Douglass.

Cagwin was named all-state in Washington after averaging 24 points, six assists and five rebounds as a senior at Belfair North Mason High School.
