* General Electric Co.’s GE Aircraft Engines division said it laid off 270 workers in Ohio and Massachusetts to cut costs amid intense price pressures faced by aircraft engine makers. The unit employs 34,000 people worldwide. The GE unit suffered a setback last week when rival Pratt & Whitney won a $3-billion contract from United Parcel Service of America Inc., the largest contract for the engine industry in recent years.

* Concentra Managed Care Inc., which advises companies seeking to contain health-care costs, agreed to be bought by investment firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe of New York for about $1.1 billion in cash and debt after failing to meet investors’ profit and performance goals. Welsh Carson will pay $16.50 in cash for each Concentra share, a 42% premium. Welsh Carson plans to increase its 14.9% stake in Concentra to 93% and find an outside buyer for the rest. Concentra, based in Boston, foundered because it charged too little for some services while promising too much to shareholders, analysts said.
