Lindner on Dunn
In Charles L. Lindner’s observations about the Geronimo Pratt case (Opinion, Feb. 28), he speculates, “Not only was [Judge George William] Dunn not elevated, but no African American has been appointed to Los Angeles’ 2nd District Court of Appeal since Dunn wrote his dissent in December 1980.”
Lindner is mistaken. Leon Thompson, an African American judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court, was elevated and became an associate justice of Division 7 of the 2nd District on Dec. 3, 1982, and served until his death on May 26, 1988. To provide context to Lind- ner’s observations, he should have recalled that in 1980 there were two African American women serving as members of the court. By 1982, they were two of the seven presiding justices of the 2nd District.
