The Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo rail station is on its way to becoming a hub for morning commuters. City officials have trimmed $1.3 million off the design of the Metrolink station project, responding to concerns that the commuter station was becoming too costly. Construction on the station, at the south end of Forbes Road near Crown Valley Parkway, is expected to begin in the fall; it should be open by July 2000. The city is working on acquiring property from adjacent businesses in the area. Funding will be provided by state transit grants, Measure M funds and about $200,000 from the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
