FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass fishing is fair but those working the shoreline with crankbaits and plastics are getting some. The striped bass bite is slow, but Mark Rogers, Covina, caught an 11-pounder on a Stocker Trout lure. Trout are biting in both reservoirs.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout remain the primary attraction and fishing is fair for trollers (Needlefish, Rapalas) and bait fishermen (Power Bait and night crawlers). Limits are not the rule.

LAKE CASITAS--Brian Bostios, Oxnard, 13 1/4-pound bass, on a plastic lizard. Paul Beppu, Ventura, Harold Choe, Camarillo, two 10-pounders and an 11 1/2-pound bass, on Crawdads. Jan Brown, Simi Valley, 10 1/2-pound bass, on a four-inch Power Worm. Lots of smaller bass. Trout action is steady as well. Leo Helfrich, Santa Barbara, five trout totaling 10 pounds, on Needlefish trolled on lead-core line.

CORONA LAKE--A 20-pound 3-ounce trout was caught by Juan Magellan of Corona. Smaller fish are coming out occasionally, but not everybody is catching fish. Power Bait and night crawlers are working best.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--More than 70 trout at 10 pounds or more in the last week? That’s what the report says. The largest was one 17-8 by Ron DeRidder, Palos Verdes. Power Bait is the bait of choice.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout are still the main attraction, with fish to about 15 pounds biting on the west shore. The bass bite has picked up as well, though few are fishing for them. Try working the shoreline with spinnerbaits or plastic worms.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass remain active and fishermen using jerkbaits and shad-pattern lures are doing well. Bluegills are active early mornings.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout remain the primary attraction--night crawlers and Power Bait are getting fish to about five pounds--but bass fishermen are sight-casting for big fish and doing well with most lures. Joe Cannis, Mission Viejo, caught and released an 8 3/4-pounder on a six-inch Pumpkin Seed plastic worm.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are biting on plugs and swim-baits at Ramp 2. Largemouth bass are being caught on swim-baits, live shad and spinnerbaits at the north and south shores.

LAKE PERRIS--The two largest bass: a 14 1/2-pounder by Troy Folkstead, Mission Viejo, on an Optimum swim-bait, and a 13-pounder by Brian Scott, Riverside, on a Castaic Trout. Jim Simkins, Pomona, caught a 2 1/2-pound bluegill on a mini-jig at the east end. A 3 1/2-pound trout was also caught.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--An 18-pound 10-ounce largemouth bass was caught at Murray by Bobby Swartwood, Chula Vista, on a Castaic Trout at Bowman Cove. Murray’s bass bite is only fair, but the bites at El Capitan, San Vicente and Lower Otay are good. Some trout are being caught at San Vicente and Miramar. Crappies are biting at El Capitan.

LAKE JENNINGS--Trout fishing has dropped off, but Power Bait and inflated night crawlers are getting some. Top catch was a 9-12 bass by Mike Long, Poway, on an Optimum swim-bait at Half-Moon Cove.

DIXON LAKE--Limits of trout are common for those arriving early and fishing with night crawlers and Power Bait. The bass are active and biting best on shiners.
