Attempt to Recall Mayor Fails in Signature Drive
An effort to recall Mayor Ricardo Sanchez has failed, city officials said.
Organizers of the recall attempt fell short by more than 200 signatures in their attempt to force Sanchez to defend his seat, according to a letter sent by City Clerk Andrea Hooper to recall organizers.
Recall supporters needed 3,247 signatures to put a recall election on the city’s ballot. The Los Angeles County registrar-recorder’s office could verify only 3,025 of the 3,910 signatures submitted, Hooper said.
Adolph Lopez, one of the recall’s organizers, said supporters will check the county’s figures and may take the matter to court. Sanchez did not return calls seeking comment.
Recall supporters had argued in their petition that Sanchez had abused his position on the council, a charge that Sanchez denied.
