But Do Baseball Writers Have the Wrong Stuff?

Share

Cheers for Orlando Cepeda’s long-overdue induction into the Hall of Fame. However, why only one major leaguer, yet two non-players? If the Veterans Committee has only four picks, why use half of them on managers, umpires and executives, when shortchanged players with genuine Hall credentials remain outside?

I admire the work of the committee, especially their efforts on behalf of Joe Jackson. But the constrictions on their authority only serve to cheat players like Jim Rice and Dick Allen, who, like Cepeda, were not elected long ago simply because the voting sportswriters are such a myopic and vindictive bunch.
