Park Amphitheater Plan Withdrawn

Share

After months of fighting public opposition, a concert promoter has backed out of a plan to build a 16,000-seat amphitheater near Camarillo.

In October, Superior Court Judge Barbara A. Lane ruled that the county failed to properly address the environmental consequences surrounding the concert venue plan at Camarillo Regional Park.

The ruling was considered a victory for the Environmental Defense Center and California Native Plan Society. The groups had sued the county claiming the plan did not deal with environmental problems--such as increased traffic, noise and threats to endangered plants and wildlife.

Cohen, who represents the New York-based promoter, SFX Entertainment Inc., indicated that the company was concerned about the threat of more lawsuits.

County officials said that the developer of an 18-hole golf course planned for the park off Lewis Road is moving forward, despite the decision to nix the amphitheater plan.

The county had hoped to generate as much as $700,000 a year from concessions and parking from the project.
