Celebrating the World’s Women

Share

Women’s International Day has been celebrated every March since 1911, when it was first held in Copenhagen as part of the suffrage movement. Observed around the globe, it is little known in the United States, but the Santa Monica-based Art of Living Coalition recently sponsored an event to encourage awareness.

Both men and women were welcomed at Saturday’s multimedia program of drumming, veil dancing, goddess tributes, flute playing, meditation, ancestral chanting and more at Culver City’s Agape Center for Truth. Event organizer and Art of Living Coalition founder Frankie Lee Slater created the program as an all-inclusive celebration honoring the feminine in everyone. “Los Angeles women and men are clearly at the leading edge of a new feminist movement where the militancy of the early years has been replaced by a softer approach.”
