Bonds Makes Olivares Pay for Mistakes

Omar Olivares was something of a savior last season, stepping into an injury-plagued Angel rotation and going 9-9 with a 4.03 earned-run average, but by no means will the right-hander be handed a starting spot this spring.

Not when he continues to make the kinds of mistakes he made in the third inning Wednesday, when he walked Bill Mueller to load the bases for Barry Bonds, who hit a three-run double to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 exhibition victory over the Angels in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“The one thing he has to do is cut down on his walks,” Manager Terry Collins said. “You cannot walk Bill Mueller to get to Barry Bonds. Omar had 91 walks last year. It’s incredible he didn’t get hurt more than he did.”

Olivares, who is competing with Jason Dickson and Jarrod Washburn for the fifth spot in the rotation, breezed through his other three innings, retiring the side in order in the first, second and fourth.

Shortstop Gary DiSarcina, out since Feb. 21 because of a broken bone in his left forearm, had his full arm cast replaced by a short-arm cast and was given the OK to increase activity.

Another examination showed the arm is healing as expected, and DiSarcina will be able to add shoulder exercises to his daily treadmill, stationary bike and throwing routine.

He still will not be able to do any work in the field, such as running.

Toronto General Manager Gord Ash acknowledged he spoke with Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi last week about a potential trade for Blue Jay pitcher Pat Hentgen, but Ash hinted he would not accept a proposal that included Angel outfielder Garret Anderson as the centerpiece.

“Who knows what could happen, but I don’t foresee a deal of that nature,” Ash told the National Post of Canada. “Pat is the kind of guy you build a staff around. I never say never, but I don’t think the particular player mentioned [Anderson] is that different from the guy we have.”

Ed Kleven, the agent for reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa, will meet with Angel representatives in Tempe today in an effort to hammer out a multiyear contract, most likely two years and an option. Hasegawa signed a one-year, $625,000 contract last week. . . . Pitchers Ramon Ortiz, Mark Harriger, Seth Etherton, Mike Bovee, Mike Butcher, Brian Cooper, Lou Pote and Keith Troutman, catchers Bret Hemphill and Fausto Tejero and shortstop Nelson Castro were sent to minor league camp.
