Washington State men’s basketball Coach Kevin Eastman resigned, saying “common sense and reality” dictated the move.

Athletic Director Rick Dickson made the announcement a day after firing the Cougars’ women’s coach, Harold Rhodes. Eastman’s record at Washington State was 69-78 overall and 31-59 in the Pacific 10 Conference.

Steve Robinson’s .500 record as coach at Florida State the last two seasons has earned him a two-year contract extension. Athletic Director Dave Hart also extended the contract of women’s coach Sue Semrau, who was 16-38 in her first two seasons.

John MacLeod denied he was pressured into resigning as coach at Notre Dame, saying it was the right time to step down. He indicated as late as Tuesday morning he intended to coach another year at Notre Dame, where he has had only three winning seasons in eight years. He wouldn’t say what changed his mind but said he did not leave for personal reasons. . . . Ross Carmichael, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward who played at Texas Tech for two seasons, has transferred to UC Santa Barbara and will have two seasons of eligibility left, Coach Bob Williams said. . . . Azusa Pacific (26-5), seeded seventh, will play Edward Waters College of Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday, at 4:15 p.m. PST in the first round of the NAIA tournament.
