Prominent Vietnam Dissident Seized
A prominent Vietnamese dissident has been arrested for allegedly possessing documents critical of the ruling Communist Party, human rights groups say.
The reported arrest of Nguyen Thanh Giang comes a few months after several dissidents were released from prison as part of a far-reaching amnesty, sparking hopes that Vietnam might be loosening its policies.
Two New York-based groups, the Committee to Protect Journalists and Human Rights Watch, and the Paris-based Free Vietnam Alliance have expressed concern over the reported arrest. The groups say Giang’s family told them that he was taken away March 4.
The U.S. State Department expressed concern about the reported arrest.
