A 59-year-old man was killed after his car swerved off the edge of an isolated mountain road and tumbled down a steep hillside, a California Highway Patrol officer said Saturday.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies had been searching for a motorist along Santa Clara Road just west of Little Tujunga Road after his employer reported him missing about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, said Lt. Larry Gump of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.

They spotted disturbed brush by the roadside and, with the help of a helicopter, determined that a car had plunged over the edge. A search-and-rescue team rappelled over the edge of the roadside to get to the crash scene, Gump said.

The victim had been ejected from the car, which fell farther down the slope. Officials did not know what time the crash occurred.

CHP Officer Todd Powers said the victim was a 59-year-old man.

Gump said the man reported missing in the same area was Richard White, 59. County coroner’s officials were still at the scene Saturday night and could not confirm whether the victim was White.
