More than 60,000 cans of food have been collected for needy families this year through the Boy Scouts’ countywide Scouting for Food program, Scouting officials said.

On a recent Saturday, about 1,600 Boy Scouts solicited donations door-to-door in neighborhoods around the county.

“Participation in this event underscores service to the community, one of the basic tenets of Scouting,” said Allen Smith, president of the Boy Scouts’ Ventura County Council.

Organizations such as Project Understanding in Ventura and the Manna Food Bank in Thousand Oaks are among the groups that will benefit.

Over the past 10 years, the project has distributed more than 200 tons of food.
