Woman Critically Hurt in Fall From Horse
A 55-year-old woman was critically injured Saturday afternoon when she was thrown from a horse in an area so remote that rescuers had to hike more than a mile to get to her, officials said.
The woman sustained head trauma and was disoriented when paramedics asked her questions to gauge her level of consciousness, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.
The woman, whose name was not released, was injured near two unpaved canyon roads, Morgan Road and Saddlebow Road, at about 3:50 p.m. The area is in Ventura County just west of West Hills, but the city of Los Angeles has a contract to provide fire service there.
A Fire Department helicopter was dispatched to airlift the woman to Northridge Hospital Medical Center. A second chopper was sent to retrieve rescuers who had entered the rugged area on foot, Collis said.
The woman was listed in critical condition Saturday night, said nursing supervisor Sylvia Mieure.
