A public hearing will be held tonight on the formation of the Santiago Geologic Hazard Abatement District, a 23-acre plot in Anaheim Hills where torrential rains caused massive landslides and forced emergency evacuations of residents.

Following the landslides in January 1993, many property owners and residents filed a lawsuit against the city. In a settlement, city officials agreed to set aside $3.5 million to operate and maintain a series of wells that monitor and control the level of water in the ground, in an effort to prevent future slides. The abatement district, if formed, would own, repair and construct more wells to prevent future landslides in the area. The hearing is at 6 p.m. in council chambers, 200 South Anaheim Blvd.
