A baseball field at TeWinkle Park will be moved to Lions Park to make room for extra softball diamonds. The council voted 3 to 2, reversing a decision the council made in September to keep the diamond at TeWinkle and expand nearby softball fields. But consultants said that plan would encroach on a track at Davis Elementary School. In exchange, Newport-Mesa Unified School District officials wanted the city to build an all-weather track at nearby Costa Mesa High School, an option that would have cost $310,000. But some Davis Elementary parents opposed the potential loss of the track. With only three softball fields in the city, there isn’t enough playing space. With the redesign, there will be four softball fields at TeWinkle.
