GM Closing Training Center in Burbank

General Motors Corp. is planning to close its Burbank dealer technician training center and 16 others around the country, and contract the work to an outside company instead, a spokeswoman said.

Raytheon Co. has been selected to provide the training. The 130 GM workers who had been training the technicians will be reassigned, spokeswoman Gracemary Allen said.

Allen said dealers have complained about the time and trouble they had in traveling to the sites. Raytheon, which will begin work on June 1, will offer training via computer and video.

“Most of them [the centers] required travel times for our dealers,” Allen said. “The dealers felt it would be better to have training closer to home.”

She said the move was not made to save money.
