8 Organizations Given Grants From United Way

San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita charities and programs that meet emerging needs in innovative ways recently received special grants from the largest private funder of health and human services in Los Angeles County.

The United Way has distributed amounts ranging from $2,800 to $5,000 to eight organizations for programs to help with issues as varied as the Y2K problem and treatment of substance abuse.

Among the recipients was the Valley Family Center, with $5,000 to increase academic performance of youth ages 10 to 18 through basic skills development by upgrading after-school computer tutorial programs.

The Santa Clarita Child and Family Center received $4,500 to develop substance abuse treatment services for area youths.

The eight were among 35 charities and programs in the county that shared $200,000 in Community Response Grants.

Awards were based on applications submitted to the United Way and approved by local volunteers, who have nearly 100% of the say in where the money goes, according United Way spokesman Todd Rosin.
