TONIGHT vs. Colorado

7:30

* Site--Rose Bowl.

* Radio--KCTD (1540).

* Records (1998)--Galaxy 24-8, Rapids 16-16.

* Record vs. Rapids (1998)--Galaxy 4-0.

* Rapids update--Having conceded an MLS-record 69 goals in 1998, the Rapids moved in the off-season to shore up their defense, acquiring defensive midfielder Matt McKeon from Kansas City, which in turn enables U.S. national team veteran Marcelo Balboa to move back to his best position, central defender. Colorado will build its attack around two foreign imports--Panamanian striker Jorge Dely Valdes and Swedish midfielder Anders Limpar, who has played in two World Cups and helped English clubs Arsenal and Everton to major championships.

* Galaxy update--Galaxy officials met with midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos’ representatives for four hours Friday, but no new agreement was reached, prompting MLS Commissioner Doug Logan to fly in for a special meeting today in an attempt to end the impasse. Cienfuegos, who resumed training with the Galaxy this week, is technically under contract, entering the first of two option years. If the meeting with Logan produces no progress, Cienfuegos has threatened to return to his native El Salvador. In Cienfuegos’ absence during the last six weeks, young American players Clint Mathis, Daniel Hernandez and Joey Franchino have taken on more prominent midfield roles.
