Police are warning residents about a telephone scam in which people call collect, pretending to be FBI agents and asking residents for personal information or cashier’s checks. Officials know of at least seven residents who received such calls last week. During one call, the FBI impostor said officials found the resident’s name at the property of a drug dealer who was arrested, said Police Sgt. Ken Coovert. The caller then told the resident to send a cashier’s check to help the FBI clear the resident from implication, Coovert said. Other calls sought information such as Social Security and bank account numbers. Police traced several calls to a correctional facility in Cook County, Ill. Authorities point out that state and federal officials do not call collect.
