Rain, Some Snow Expected From 1st Spring Storm

The first storm of the spring is expected to bring rain to Los Angeles and some snow at resort levels in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains on Thursday.

“The chance of rain looks pretty good,” said Jeff House, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.

“It should start before dawn and continue, off and on, into the afternoon,” he said. “We’re looking for a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch in the Los Angeles Basin, and maybe an inch to an inch and a quarter in the foothills.”

House said that, unlike the storms earlier in March, this one isn’t very cold, so the snow levels will be relatively high and pose little threat to traffic on any of the major freeway passes through Southern California’s mountains.

“It doesn’t look like much snow below 6,000 feet,” House said.

He said high temperatures in the basin should be between the mid-50s and low 60s on Thursday, following overnight lows from the low 40s to the low 50s.

Skies are expected to clear Friday.
