City Sides With Union in Cruise Terminal Dispute
In an ongoing labor dispute involving the cruise ship terminal, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to support the months-long battle of the facility’s hostesses to unionize.
The action, sponsored by Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, bolstered the efforts of 22 cruise hostesses who are trying to organize employees at Cruise and Tours Services, a subcontractor of Royal Caribbean Lines.
Earlier this year, the company’s offices at the cruise ship terminal were picketed by the hostesses and their supporters. Since April, the hostesses have lodged complaints with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging wrongful terminations and unfair labor practices by Cruise and Tours.
Terminal hostesses are responsible for processing and assisting passengers during departures and arrivals in port. They check tickets, verify travel documents, and provide information.
“All workers in the Port of Los Angeles should have the right to organize free of threats and intimidation,” Goldberg said.
