A Wide Array of Holy Week, Passover Observances Planned

Share

Christians and Jews enter the sacred season of Holy Week and Passover next week, celebrating common themes of sacrifice and salvation.

The eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover, which begins Wednesday night, commemorates the dramatic exodus of Hebrew slaves from Egypt more than 3,300 years ago. According to the biblical account, to convince a stubborn pharaoh to let his people go, God sent forth 10 plagues, including the death of all first-born sons, but “passed over” homes of the Hebrews who had smeared their doorposts with the blood of a sacrificial lamb.

Christians also commemorate salvation through a sacrificial lamb--Jesus, the paschal lamb of God whom they believe shed his blood to deliver the world from sin. Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection represent the foundation of Christian belief. The Holy Week events begin Sunday with Palm Sunday, marking Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and run through Easter Sunday on April 4, commemorating his resurrection.

One pastor observing both traditions is the Rev. Mike Friedman, an Orthodox Jew turned Southern Baptist minister. Underscoring common themes, Friedman will be offering the traditional Passover feast, called a Seder, and an explanatory film Sunday at First Southern Baptist Church in Temple City. He and other Christians believe that Passover foreshadowed their own deliverance, drawing parallels, for instance, between the Passover blood on the doorpost and Christ’s blood on the cross.

“The blood of the Exodus saves us today,” Friedman said.
