Vandals Toss Molotov Cocktail at Mission Viejo Library

A Molotov cocktail erupted in flames at the front door of the Mission Viejo Public Library in the second act of vandalism there in recent weeks, officials said Saturday.

City librarian Valerie Meyer said several exterior lights also were broken and two cars in the parking lot were damaged in the incident, which occurred after the library closed at 11 p.m. Friday.

The library was not damaged by the fire, but Meyer estimated it would cost $2,000 to repair the light fixtures. Both cars had their windows broken and tires slashed, said Meyer.

About two weeks ago, Meyer said, exterior lights at the library were destroyed by vandals. In both incidents, she said, graffiti was scrawled on walls and windows.

“This is unacceptable and malicious,” she said.

Lt. William Francis of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said the graffiti appeared to consist of “tag” marks typically used as signatures.

He said there are no suspects.
