Did Dodger Way to Play Need to Be Rewritten?

Share

Has anybody noticed the incredible lack of wisdom that Dodger management displays these days? First they unceremoniously dump the franchise player and future Hall of Famer, Mike Piazza, over contract difficulties (what’s a few million more among friends?) to effectively get Gary Sheffield. The rest of the trade with the Marlins is a complete washout. Nothing against Sheffield but, really, who would you rather see in Dodger blue, Piazza or Sheffield?

Then, to compound the stupidity of it all, they take a great defensive catcher who can barely hit his weight in Charles Johnson and unceremoniously dump him for Todd Hundley. Now you have a catcher who can’t throw--one of the main knocks against Piazza--and who hits even less than Johnson. I won’t even get into my feelings about trading Dave Mlicki for three so-so pitchers. Why didn’t they trade Carlos Perez, who has done nothing for the Dodgers?

Am I missing something here or am I blinded by my love for the Dodgers? Stop these stupid trades. Think it through, before you pull the trigger. Is Dodger management just plain stupid?

I was born in 1961, Koufax’s first good year. I grew up with Garvey, Cey, Russell and Lopes and didn’t breathe for the full 10 minutes it took Bob Welch to strike out Reggie Jackson in the ’78 World Series.

Homers by Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark were my death and one by Kirk Gibson was my resurrection. The ‘90s have been a little short on transcendence, but that’s baseball, and maybe the ‘90s.

Through it all, the best part of being a Dodger fan was Dodger Stadium. There was no such thing as a bad game when you were there. America doesn’t have cathedrals, it has ballparks; and Dodger Stadium is clearly, objectively the best and most beautiful of them all. I guess lovers would still stroll the Seine if they built a Nouveau Notre Dame with luxury boxes, but if Dodger Stadium moves, I’ll know how they felt in Brooklyn.

I have lived in Southern California all my life and talk of the Dodgers moving next to the Coliseum is about as asinine as it gets. Why not move Hollywood to Barstow?

It was so nice to see Rupert Murdoch’s benevolent proposal to move Dodger Stadium to Exposition Park so that former residents of Chavez Ravine whose properties were condemned to make way for the ballpark could reclaim their land. Who says Murdoch is just a money-grubbing capitalist? Forget Donald Sterling. I nominate Rupert Murdoch humanitarian of the year!

So, Kevin Malone feels that the Dodgers’ slow start is due to “phases where they learn about each other.” As we learn more and more about Malone, et al, and their dismantling of the Dodger tradition, fans will beat a fast exit from the turnstiles.

There’s a curse on L.A. teams: No matter how good they are, they’re no good.
