College Journalists Win Honors at Conference

* Student members of the Ventura College Press campus publication took home several honors at the annual Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges conference.

Managing Editor Trisha Kirk received a Warren Mack Memorial Scholarship, plus an honorable mention in the category of on-the-spot layout of a tabloid-sized front page.

Other winners included:

Photography Editor Shannon Dybvig, who won third place for a mail-in photo essay. Dybvig, along with photographer Marc Timmons, also won an honorable mention in the same category.

Carla Peterson, an assistant news editor and copy editor, who won third place for on-the-spot copy editing.

Kirk and Dybvig, who won an honorable mention in the on-the-spot team feature category.

Former reporter Josh Cunningham, who won an honorable mention for a mail-in sports feature.

Emily Vizzo, who won an honorable mention for an on-the-spot critical review.

Jeff Jonsson, who won an honorable mention for a photo illustration.

And Sports Editor Robert Browne, who won fourth place in on-the-spot sports writing.

The conference was held April 9-11 at Cal State Fresno. More than 400 students from 44 community colleges throughout California and Arizona participated in the competition.

Volunteers Recognized for Hours of Service * The city of Ventura has announced winners of its annual volunteer awards. Members of the Volunteer Corps of the Montalvo Storefront Police Station were honored for contributing more than 8,000 hours of service and for their fund-raising efforts. Larry Smith received the Volunteer of Year award for his “dedication to the Police Department.”
