Montreal Is Park’s Place in 7-0 Win

The Dodgers defeated the Montreal Expos, 7-0, Monday night at Olympic Stadium--marking Manager Davey Johnson’s 1,000th victory.

Dodger starter Chan Ho Park (3-2) continued his recent turnaround, winning for the second time in as many starts on the trip. Park overwhelmed the struggling Expos before a crowd of 5,132 at Olympic Stadium.

The right-hander pitched seven innings and matched his season high with eight strikeouts. Park gave up only five hits and walked two while throwing 105 pitches, 66 for strikes.

Expo starter Dustin Hermanson (2-3) also pitched seven innings, giving up eight hits and four runs.

Alan Mills worked the final two innings for the Dodgers, who improved to 15-11 and 6-1 on the nine-game trip with two games remaining against the Expos (7-17).

The Dodgers staked Park to a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring groundout by Gary Sheffield. The Dodgers went ahead, 3-0, in the fourth on a two-run double by Todd Hundley.

The Dodger catcher has been making strides at the plate recently after struggling while rehabilitating from reconstructive surgery on his throwing elbow in September 1997. Hundley drove in the Dodger runs in a 12-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday with a two-run homer--his third--and run-scoring single.

On Monday, Hundley went three for five with two doubles and three runs batted in. Sheffield added run-scoring singles in the seventh and ninth, putting the Dodgers ahead, 5-0.

Shortstop Mark Grudzielanek scored on Sheffield’s groundout in the first. Grudzielanek also scored on Sheffield’s single in the seventh after he tripled with one out against his former team.

Grudzielanek entered the game in the first, running for second baseman Eric Young. The Dodger leadoff batter stole his major league leading 18th base in the inning but was forced to leave because he strained his right calf.
