Redondo Beach Voters to Elect New City Clerk
Voters will elect their first new city clerk in 17 years on Tuesday.
The candidates--municipal clerk Sandy Forrest, 53, and business owner and accountant Eleanor Manzano, 39--were the top vote-getters in the six-candidate primary in March. Forrest received 31% of the ballots cast to Manzano’s 21%.
The winner will replace John Oliver, who has been city clerk since 1982. Oliver ran for reelection and received only 18% of the March vote. Oliver’s poor performance was attributed to recent problems with the law. About six months before the election, Oliver pleaded no contest to forging a sticker for a vehicle license plate.
In addition to performing the traditional duties associated with the office, the Redondo Beach city clerk acts as the city’s chief financial officer.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to Cathy Turner, acting chief deputy of the city clerk’s office. The city clerk’s office is the only item on the ballot.
