Three elementary schools will take advantage of a 20-student-per-teacher kindergarten program next school year, even though it will mean layoffs for 14 instructional aides in June. Fountain Valley School District trustees on Tuesday approved the pilot program, which will begin next school year at Plavan, Newland and Tamura elementary schools. Carl Dane, assistant superintendent of personnel, said many of the instructional assistants affected will find work elsewhere in the district.

The new kindergarten program will split the curriculum into two tracks, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Kindergartners will be assigned to morning or afternoon tracks by lottery and parents will be notified in late summer.
