COSTA MESA

The City Council last week voted 5 to 0 to grant a waiver to the Lions Club for the cost of police services and delivery of picnic tables, chairs and benches for its annual fish fry. The council agreed to waive fees of $1,000 for the equipment delivery and as much as $8,000 for police.

For the first time in 53 years, the Lions Club will hold its annual Fish Fry and Carnival at Orange Coast College rather than Lions Park. In addition to the famous fish dinners, the Lions Club will offer a larger carnival, a new crafts area, an increased number of entertainers, a classic car show, a concert and a Battle of the High School Bands.

Organizers hope to boost attendance to more than 100,000 from the usual 45,000 to 60,000. Because of the additional costs the Lions Club will incur, members asked the City Council for financial assistance.
