Lurking around the corner is the 1999-2000 fiscal year, which begins July 1. That also marks the date the young city will assume responsibilities now handled by the county. So, at its study session Wednesday, the City Council suggested it hire the county to continue to carry much of the burden, this time under contract. Though it could not make any formal decisions on the items at the session, the council suggested contracts with the county for maintenance, health services and police.

Police services would cost the city about $810,000 annually. That would include 24-hour patrols, as well as half an investigator’s time and a community services officer, who would set up a volunteer corps for assistance.
