Stadium for CSUN

Share

Sam Jankovich should just go away. His op-ed piece on Cal State Northridge athletics (“CSUN Needs Money--and Lots of It--for Athletics,” May 9) is such a mishmash of statistical razzmatazz and lies as to be laughable if it weren’t such a serious matter.

The students have consistently voted against big-time athletics, and the local residents hate the idea. But the powers that be like the big money.

President [Blenda] Wilson has approved a program no one else would on her way out the door and [Jankovitch] can’t wait to run a Division I department. They tried to sacrifice the sports kids play at the altar of the Big Sky Conference last year.

CSUN should spend big money on the school and little money on sports.

I am appalled that the university wishes to build a larger stadium on North Campus. I am also disturbed to hear the university will lease it for other than sport purposes.

Residents have the right to protect their property values. That land was given to the university to use for educational purposes. By building a stadium there, they bring crime, noise, traffic and utter chaos to a quiet, peaceful neighborhood.

I am against such actions and recommend that the university use Pierce College’s existing stadium.
