UCLA Wins Men’s Tennis Regional Final

Top-ranked UCLA advanced to the third round of the NCAA men’s tennis championships with a 4-1 regional final victory over San Diego State Saturday at the L.A. Tennis Center in Westwood.

The third round begins next Saturday at Athens, Ga.

USC advanced to a regional final with a 4-0 victory over Missouri-Kansas City at Fresno. The Trojans play Fresno State today.

Pepperdine was eliminated from the tournament with a 4-0 defeat by Arizona State in a regional final at Tempe, Ariz.

UCLA, Pepperdine and USC advanced to regional finals in the NCAA women’s tennis tournament.

UCLA defeated Western Michigan, 5-0, at the L.A. Tennis Center. The Bruins play South Alabama, a 5-0 winner over Colorado Saturday, today at noon.

Pepperdine defeated Boston University, 5-0, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. The Waves play Louisiana State, a 5-2 winner over Ohio State today at noon.

USC beat Drake, 5-0, at Marks Tennis Stadium. USC plays San Diego, which defeated Minnesota, 5-1, today at 1 p.m.

Defending national champion USC’s hopes for a Pacific 10 Conference baseball championship disappeared with an 8-7 loss to Washington at Dedeaux Field.

The loss allowed Stanford to clinch the conference championship, despite the Cardinal’s 12-7 defeat by UCLA (30-28, 13-10) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

USC (32-23, 16-7 in the Pac-10) is two games behind Stanford (39-13, 18-5) in conference play. Both teams conclude Pac-10 play with single games today.

Loyola Marymount split a West Coast Conference doubleheader with Santa Clara, giving the Lions (30-25, 17-12) a one-game lead over Portland (23-16, 16-13) in the race for the West Division title with one game to play.

The winner of the West Division will play Coast Division champion Pepperdine (42-11, 21-8), a 4-1 winner Saturday over San Diego, in the WCC championship series.

Cal State Fullerton (44-10, 25-4), which has already clinched the Big West Conference title, put a damper on Long Beach State’s playoff hopes with a 10-3 victory over the 49ers (31-21, 18-11).
