Capistrano Unified teachers are voting through Thursday on a tentative salary increase and benefits agreement with the district. The vote by members of the Capistrano Unified Education Assn. caps negotiations that have been underway since January. Of the district’s 2,100 educators, 209 are members of the union and will vote on the plan. The agreement will cover all teachers, district spokeswoman Julie Jennings said.

The annual negotiation involves teacher salaries, health benefits, reconfiguring schedules for teachers who lead extracurricular activities and a plan to aid struggling teachers before disciplinary action takes place. The proposed agreement calls for a 3.75% salary increase, retroactive to Jan. 1, that would result in a range of $33,592 for first-year teachers to $68,281 for the top tier of educators, said Vicki Soderberg, co-chair of the teachers’ negotiation team.

Despite some salary compromise, the plan is expected to garner approval from union members. School board members will vote on the plan at their meeting Monday.
