Commuters to Pedal for Bike to Work Day

Share

Commuters across Southern California will ride their bicycles to work or school today in celebration of Bike to Work Day.

The campaign, part of the statewide California Bike Commute Week, aims to introduce people to the benefits of bicycle commuting.

“There’s nothing like rising gasoline prices to remind commuters that there are less costly ways to get to work than driving alone,” said Jim Sims, director of Southern California Rideshare.

Southland motorists pay 10 times as much to get to work as bicyclists--$104 per months for driving versus $10 for bicycling, organizers of Bike to Work Day say.

Currently, fewer than 1% of commuters bicycle to work.

Bike to Work Day is sponsored by the California Bicycle Coalition, American Lung Assn., South Coast Air Quality Management District, Southern California Rideshare and several Southern California cities and transit agencies.
