For millions of boys growing up in America in the 1940s-1960s, Charles Atlas was considered the epitome of male physical fitness. Countless ads for his muscle-building course graced the pages of adolescent-oriented magazines such as Superman, Batman and Adventure Comics. Atlas promised to transform 97-pound weaklings, who got sand kicked in their faces by bullies at the beach, into muscular supermen no one would dare disrespect.

Atlas’ original “Dynamic-Tension” muscle-building course (effective for both men and women) is still available through the Internet (www.charlesatlas.com) for $45. In addition, the Atlas Web site also offers vitamins, T-shirts and other merchandise.
