Gunmen waiting in ambush killed a top government aide as he walked to work Thursday, and investigators gave credence to claims of responsibility by the Red Brigades, leftists who terrorized Italy in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Massimo D’Antona, a close advisor to Italy’s labor minister, was shot by at least two young men several blocks from his home near central Rome.

Interior Minister Rosa Russo Jervolino said the killing was a carefully prepared execution and called an emergency meeting of the country’s security officials after briefing the lower house of Parliament.

D’Antona, 51, was considered one of the country’s most accomplished labor lawyers and was Labor Minister Antonio Bassolino’s top aide.

RAI state TV said police were giving heavy credence to letters carrying claims of responsibility made in the name of the Red Brigades to two newspapers, Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero.
