Civic Image

* The Times [on May 10] juxtaposed two interesting articles: Ronald Brownstein’s “Words That Inspire: This Century’s Top Ten Gems of Political Eloquence,” reminds us of the eloquence of Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech, and the emotional wallop of John F. Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” (I was there when he said it; powerful, powerful stuff), proving that words can be mightier than any weapon devised by man.

Contrast that to the quote attributed to Santa Clarita resident Casey May, discussing the possibility of Nordstrom locating to our city (“Nordstrom Price May Be Too High For Town”): “I love their stuff. They have great shoes.”

Santa Clarita is a great community but if we “need” Nordstrom for our civic image, then it really doesn’t say much about us, does it?
