USC’s Davis Continues His Run

USC’s Jerome Davis won a record fourth consecutive Pacific 10 Conference title in the 400 meters and finished first in three other events as the Trojan men won their second conference track and field title in three years Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz.

Davis, who also won the 200 and anchored two first-place relay teams, accounted for 40 of the Trojans 164 points.

Sultan McCullough won the 100 in a time of 10.18 seconds.

UCLA won its third consecutive women’s title with Seilala Sua winning her third event of the two-day competition. Sua, who won the shot and javelin Friday night and finished fourth in the hammer, threw the discus 199-9.

UCLA had 160.5 points, 20.5 ahead of USC. Torri Edwards of USC won the 100 and 200.

Loyola Marymount won its second consecutive West Coast Conference championship and earned an automatic berth in the NCAA baseball playoffs by defeating Pepperdine, 7-6, in third game of the WCC championship series at Loyola.

Loyola (33-26), which won the series opener Friday, lost the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 18-2. In the decisive nightcap, Loyola overcame a 5-2 deficit with a four-run sixth inning. A seventh-inning homer by Loyola shortstop Curt Fiore provided the Lions with their winning margin.

Pepperdine (43-14), which has been ranked in the top 10 for most of the season, is assured of an at-large berth in the 64-team playoffs. The bracket will be announced Monday.

Stacey Nuveman hit her nation-leading 29th and 30th home runs as UCLA defeated Minnesota, 5-0, to advance to the final game of an NCAA softball regional at UCLA.

UCLA (58-6) will play Missouri (41-20) in the championship game of the double-elimination tournament today at 1 p.m. If Missouri wins, there will be another game at 3.

Missouri advanced to the final by defeating Cal State Northridge, 3-1, and Minnesota, 3-0, on Saturday.

Top-ranked UCLA advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA men’s tennis championships with a 4-1 victory over Virginia Tech at Athens, Ga.

UCLA (24-2) will play today against Florida (20-5), a 4-2 winner Saturday over Southern Methodist.

Baylor (25-3), seeded 15th, beat four-time defending champion Stanford, 4-2.

Top-seeded Florida (31-1), the defending NCAA champion in women’s tennis, beat fifth-seeded Duke, 5-2, to advance to today’s championship match against second-seeded Stanford (28-2), which beat California, 5-1.

Duke was awarded its first NCAA women’s golf championship when lightning and heavy rain washed out the final round of the tournament and a comeback attempt by Arizona State at Tulsa, Okla.

Duke won with a 54-hole total of 43-over 895. Georgia and Arizona State tied for second at 51-over 903, followed by Arizona at 904. Pepperdine was fifth at 911, USC seventh at 914.

Grace Park of Arizona State won the individual title with a one-under 212 total for 54 holes. Defending champion Jennifer Rosales of USC and Tamie Durdin of Pepperdine tied for fourth at eight-over 221.
