MOVIES

John Sayles’ “Limbo,” stars David Strathairn and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, right, as a traumatized fisherman and a singer whose lives are foreever changed with the arrival of his fast-talking half-brother (Casey Siemaszko). Vanessa Martinez plays Mastrantonio’s disaffected daughter. The film opens Friday at selected theaters.

“Instinct” stars Anthony Hopkins as a primatologist, held captive in a brutal prison for the criminally insane, who is remanded to a psychiatrist (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who tries to unlock the mystery of the mind of an apparent madman. Opening wide on Friday.

THEATER

Frank Wedekind’s century-old tragicomedy, “The Marquis of Keith,” inspired Cornerstone Theater Company’s “A.K.A.: A Beverly Hills Musical Morality Tale,” by Shem Bitterman, about a man trying to peddle his vision of a local arts center. Opens Friday at Beverly Hills High School’s Salter Theater.

More than 100 paintings, prints and drawings by the great Mexican artist Diego Rivera will be featured in “Diego Rivera: Art & Revolution,” the first U.S. survey of the artist’s work in 13 years, opening today at LACMA.

DANCE

Mikhail Baryshnikov, right,in a 1997 performance, displays his thoroughly modern White Oak Dance Project in challenging new repertory from Tuesday to Thursday at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The company also appears from June 23 to 27 in Royce Hall, UCLA. Look for works by Tamasaburo Bando, Neil Greenberg, Trisha Brown and co-founder Mark Morris.

POP MUSIC

Two of Ireland’s more noteworthy contributions to rock music surface on Friday, with veteran Celtic bard Van Morrison, right, headlining the Universal Amphitheatre and the colorful Shane McGowan, the former Pogues lead singer and now the leader of his own band, the Popes, takes the stage at the House of Blues in West Hollywood.

JAZZ

The 13th annual UCLA JazzReggae Festival features seven hours of music today (starting at noon) for just $3 general admission, free to UCLA students. Performing will be Roy Hargrove, Roy Ayers, Jack Costanzo’s Latin jazz group, Mingus Amungus, Cedric Im Brooks and the Washington Prep Ensemble.

VIDEO

Veteran actors Ian Bannen and David Kelly are full of the blarney in the charming Irish comedy, “Waking Ned Devine.” Kirk Jones wrote and directed this fanciful farce about a small Irish town engulfed in lottery fever. The import, which also stars Fionnula Flanagan, arrives Tuesday on video.

MUSIC

A field of 22 semifinalist guitarists will be narrowed to five in pursuit of $20,000 prize as the third semiannual Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition unfolds at Pepperdine, in Malibu, starting Friday, with the finals next Sunday open to the public. Get your tickets early; last year, 200 fans were turned away.
