Bruins Are Relaxed, Ready for DePaul

The UCLA softball team spent its day off before today’s NCAA semifinals doing the things you’d expect--practicing and watching film.

Except the film the Bruins watched starred Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

The Bruins, who will play DePaul today at 10 a.m. PDT in the first semifinal of the Women’s College World Series, spent Saturday at the movies watching “Notting Hill” after practicing in the morning.

“We want to throw around and put something else together,” Bruin Coach Sue Enquist said after Friday’s victory over Fresno State. “We want to do something away from softball and get out of the hotel.

“If we sit around in the hotel all day [Saturday], it doesn’t take long for cabin fever to set in.”

While UCLA (61-6) won’t have to worry about cabin fever, the status of third baseman Julie Adams will be a source of concern until game time.

Adams played Friday after dislocating her left shoulder for the second time this season Thursday. She was two for two and scored the run in a 1-0 victory over Fresno State in the second round.

Saturday she iced the shoulder and will do so again this morning, as well as stretching exercises.

Today, the top-seeded Bruins will play the team they defeated to open the Series. The Blue Demons (54-13) led the Bruins for most of the game before Christie Ambrosi tied the score, 1-1, with a leadoff home run in the sixth and hit a run-scoring single to tie the score, 2-2, in the seventh.

Crissy Buck won the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

In elimination games:

DePaul 1, Arizona 0-In the game to determine UCLA’s opponent today, the eighth-seeded Blue Demons got a two-hit shutout from Liza Brown to defeat the second-seeded Wildcats and advance to the semifinals in their first Series.

DePaul got an RBI double by Julie Luna in the fourth inning for the game’s only run. After scoring three runs in their Series opener, the Wildcats (53-16) were shut out in consecutive games.

In an earlier game, Luna’s home run leading off the second gave pitcher Nicole Terpstra and the Blue Demons a 1-0 victory over Southern Mississippi (52-9).

California 1, Fresno State 0--Kirsten Drake singled home Megumi Takasaki in the second inning for the game’s lone run and the seventh-seeded Golden Bears eliminated the Bulldogs. It was the fifth shutout of the Series.

Takasaki’s double and Drake’s single were two of only three hits by California (51-21). Fourth-seeded Fresno State (65-10) had five.

In an earlier game, Lisa Iancin was two for three and drove in both runs to give California a 2-0 victory over Arizona State and knock the sixth-seeded Sun Devils (41-28) out of the Series.
