SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

Members of Carpenters Local 209 continue their protest outside Mission San Juan Capistrano this week, despite concerns over tourists’ safety.

Jerry Miller, the mission’s director, said the picketers’ sign is too large, which forces visitors walking to the mission’s front entrance to use the street.

“We have asked the Police Department to make sure they do not block most of the sidewalk,” Miller said.

The protesters, who began their campaign last month, say that union employees are not receiving fair wages and health benefits from a contractor who is working on the construction of a school near the mission.

Officials at the carpenters union could not be reached for comment.
