Managers of the weapons labs run by the University of California grew complacent about security as the Cold War thawed, a new report has found.

“Based on their own statements, we believe that lab management took security largely for granted,” said reviewers.

But the study by a special committee of the UC President’s Council on the National Laboratories concluded that the labs and the university are developing better security measures.

The report, which focused on the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos labs run by UC, estimated that it will take an initial $100 million per lab to tighten security.
