Yorba Linda Mayor John M. Gullixson, who is at the center of an upheaval at City Hall, on Thursday announced he was running for Orange County Superior Court judge.
At Gullixson’s urging, the City Council in September fired longtime City Manager Arthur C. Simonian after he was accused of financial malfeasance. Simonian’s dismissal ignited a vocal backlash by his supporters, who this week launched a recall campaign against the mayor.
Gullixson has dismissed the effort as petty politics.
He said that running for the judiciary has been a lifelong dream and that the recent resignation of several judges created the perfect opportunity for him.
“I’ve been a lawyer now for 23 full years, and I have about five years before I retire,” Gullixson said. “I want to make this a part of my career.’
The election will be in March.
